It is a culture of Pakistani people to give a present from heart and not from store. We express our courtesy and admiration to our guests by presenting such gifts that represents our beautiful, colorful culture. And Ajrak is one of it. Ajrak is a block printed cotton/lawn/linen cloth with deep crimson red color base, bearing beautifully and vividly constructed symmetrical patterns with dispersed unprinted sparking white motifs. Initially, Ajrak block designs were made on shawls but in modern time era, Ajrak features a wide range of products such as ladies’ suits, dupattas, sarees, bedsheets and much more. It has gone onto to become a fashion statement across the globe. Ajrak art has travelled a long way and its legacy continues till today. Sindhi Ajrak has adorned many legends with its intricate designs and patterns. Mitiari is known for Ajrak craftmanship. Ajrak is a more than a fabric, it is a culture, a sindhi tradition, which has been traceable from the earliest archaeological finds of the old Indus civilization of Mohen Jodero. Ajrak’s origin can be marked out from the ancient times. Around 2500 BC when a statue of King- Priest was quarried from Mohenjo-Daro which had draped a shawl over his shoulder – adorned with a trefoil pattern, which is a three leafed clover, sprinkled with small circles filled with a red color. The trefoil signifies three sun-disks glued together to characterize the unity of the gods of the Sun, water and earth. Also, history also tells us that Egyptians used to clothe their mummies with Ajrak, imported from Sindh which they called “Sindhinâ€. In 500 BC, the Ajrak was also presented to Persian King “Dara (first) at his crown ceremony. Muslim Sindhi rulers continued the tradition and awarded Ajrak in recognition of outstanding performances and services rendered by individuals. It is customarily conferred even today on respectable guests. It is gracefully useful for the men of Sindh who wear it as a turban taking pride of their identities whereas ajrak shawls and chaddar are delightfully used by Sindhi women The process of Ajrak consists of twenty-one stages and is very complex. Nature plays a very important part in the making of Ajrak. This is because the colors that artisans use in making Ajrak are created specifically with natural and organic dyes extracted from trees, fruits and vegetables, leaving no impact on the skin and natural environment.
